How to choose the right modular aluminum profile for your project
Modular aluminum profiles are widely used in many fields such as industrial equipment racks, safety fences, workbenches, test tooling, new energy equipment, exhibition stands, etc. due to their characteristics of easy assembly, no need for welding, repeatable modifications, and lightweight. Many projects only refer to the outer dimensions in the early selection stage. After being put into use, problems such as frame deformation, mismatched accessories, poor corrosion resistance, and inability to be modified later occur, which increases rework costs. So, how to choose suitable modular aluminum profiles for the project?
Actual usage conditions
When selecting a model, you must first clarify the load, span and usage environment of the project. Distinguish whether it is a static load or a dynamic load. Protective fences and ordinary workbenches are mostly static loads; robot bases, conveyor lines, etc. have vibration and impact, which are dynamic loads, and a safety factor needs to be reserved for selection.
The span of the profile directly affects the amount of deformation. The larger the span, the easier it is to sag and bend. Long-span structures should use larger cross-sections or thicker-walled profiles.
In terms of environment, ordinary indoor workshops use conventional anodized profiles; coastal, humid, and slightly corrosive environments require thickening of the oxide film or powder coating; clean workshops give priority to profiles with delicate surfaces that are not prone to dust accumulation.
Choose the right profile series, section and wall thickness
Common modular aluminum profiles on the market are 20, 30, 40, 45, 60, and 80 series. The numbers represent the cross-sectional side length.
20 and 30 series: light load scenarios, small protective covers, experimental brackets, display frames, suitable for small spans and low loads.
40 series (4040, 4080): industrial general-purpose model, with workbench, rack, protective fence and complete accessories. It is the mainstream choice for most automation projects.
60, 80 and above heavy-duty series: heavy-duty base, gantry frame, large-span structure, pursuing high rigidity and anti-deformation.
Aluminum alloy material and surface treatment
Commonly used materials:
1. 6063‑T5: It has good surface oxidation effect, suitable for ordinary fences, workbenches and conventional racks, and has strong versatility.
2. 6061‑T6: It has higher mechanical strength and impact resistance. It is mostly used for heavy-duty bases and stress-bearing tooling.
Surface treatment:
Anodizing is the mainstream in industry, and it is wear-resistant and rust-proof. The recommended oxidation film thickness is 8-10μm indoors and 10μm or more for outdoor humid environments. Powder spraying has rich colors and better anti-corrosion performance, making it suitable for outdoor working conditions.
Pay attention to accessories compatibility and later expansion
Modular aluminum profiles are a complete system. Profiles, corner pieces, T-nuts, footings, sealing plates, and hinges need to be standardized. If you only compare price profiles and ignore matching accessories, the assembly may not be tightly locked and the hole positions may not match.
If there is a need for upgrading or modification in the later stage of the project, priority will be given to the mainstream series that are common in the market. There will be sufficient supply of accessories to facilitate later installation of structures and achieve modular reuse.
Processing and purchasing tips
Cutting, drilling, and tapping processes require control of tolerances. Excessive tolerances may lead to large splicing gaps and uneven assembly. For new projects, it is recommended to apply for sample assembly testing first, and confirm the suitability of profiles, accessories, and plates before purchasing in bulk.
Quick selection reference
Small brackets, laboratory tooling: 20/30 series, 6063‑T5, light/standard wall thickness
Workbench and production line protective fence: 4040, 4080, 6063-T5, standard wall thickness
Heavy-duty base, long-span racks: 4080, 6060, 8080, 6061‑T6, heavy-duty wall thickness
Outdoor wet environment: match the corresponding cross-section, upgrade oxide film or powder coating
Key points for selecting and avoiding pitfalls
1. The bearing capacity does not depend on the appearance, but the wall thickness and cross-sectional rigidity;
2. For dynamic working conditions of vibration, a safety factor is reserved, and models cannot be directly selected based on static load;
3. The notches are of uniform standard, and there is no need to mix national and European standards;
4. Match the surface technology according to the use environment;
5. If there is a need for modification and upgrading, priority should be given to the general profile series on the market.
