Can aluminum sheets be cut with a laser
When processing, we often deal with aluminum sheets, and one question is whether aluminum sheets can be cut with a laser?
The previous laser cutter could already cut aluminum plates. Back then, workers would apply ink to the aluminum before cutting. Also, it was really hard to adjust the laser settings. At that time, it could only cut aluminum plates that were 1mm thick. After gaining some experience, the cuts on the aluminum plates became really smooth and there was no slag left.
When it comes to laser cutting aluminum plates, you also need to consider the power of the laser generator. A 6000W laser can cut up to 16mm thick, and a 4500W one can handle 12mm, but the processing cost will be higher because this is a highly reflective material. Laser cutting works by focusing a high-power density laser beam on the workpiece, causing the material to melt, vaporize, ablate, or reach its ignition point quickly, while high-speed gas flow coaxial with the beam blows away the molten material, thus cutting through the workpiece.
Is the cut surface of laser-cut aluminum as smooth as when cutting other materials?
The cuts on aluminum are also smooth. Aluminum is just a highly reflective material, so it needs a powerful laser. The cutting gas is the same as for other materials, usually nitrogen, and it won't make the surface rough.
Features of Using Laser Cutting for Aluminum Plates:
1. Narrow cutting seam: The cutting seam of laser-cut aluminum plates is generally between 0.1mm and 0.2mm.
2. Smooth cutting surface: The cut surface of laser-cut aluminum plates has no burrs or slag.
3. Minimal heat deformation: Laser cutting has a fine seam, fast speed, and concentrated energy, so the heat transferred to the material is minimal, causing very little deformation.
4. Material saving: Laser processing uses computer programming, allowing the laser equipment to nest different shapes of aluminum parts efficiently, improving material utilization and saving a lot of material costs.
5. How thick an aluminum plate can be cut mainly depends on the power of the laser generator. Generally, a 6000W laser can cut up to 16mm, and a 4500W laser can cut up to 12mm.
Summary: Based on personal experience, CO2 lasers are relatively cheaper, and if the laser generator has high power, you can try cutting aluminum plates when really necessary. Note what I said above: apply a black absorbing coating on the aluminum surface to prevent reflection from damaging the lens or laser head. As for fiber lasers, it’s better not to cut aluminum plates—it’s not worth it; consider other methods for processing aluminum.
Precautions when laser cutting aluminum: Aluminum is highly reflective and can damage the laser, so use it sparingly. For aluminum plates under 6mm, CNC punching can be used; for plates over 6mm, water jet cutting is recommended.
